Recruiting DVDs
I started with “ESPN highlight” videos for kids and that moved into recruiting DVDs this past year. I had thought that a highlight video would be something to send out but we talked to a few college coaches and they don’t like highlight videos. Their opinion is that because it only shows the good stuff that it makes every player look like a star. They were interested in what the player is doing when they’re not in the action.
What the college coaches wanted was a complete game. It takes a few games to get the one that represents your child accurately, but it’s a lot less expensive than producing a highlight video. To produce a highlight video requires many games (either half a season or at least 10 games, depending upon the sport) and a lot of editing time. There’s still editing time needed for this method but it’s much less, which translates into less money.
Also, I include interviews with the player and the current coach. Both interviews are short. The player needs to express why they want to continue playing and the coach will have a good perspective on the players ability to perform at the next level. Below is a sample of the DVD splash screen. With this player there are 2 choices to click on, the interviews and the game. With another player, I had a second game too. We have a little over an hour’s worth of room to work with.
